Freckles and his sister were taken to a rural animal shelter in Southern Virginia where he was absolutely terrified. His sister was adopted and Freckles made his way up to Northern Virginia and into our rescue system.
It turns out that he is an extremely sweet Pekingese who responds very well to human attention. As a matter of fact, he craves it and will seek it out. We think he is about 5 - 6 years old. His foster mom reports that this adorable boy is very friendly and one of his favorite activities is to snuggle with his foster parents on their laps.
Here is a note from his foster mom:
“I gave Freckles a bath. He was so good! He stayed very still and let me thoroughly wash him. Afterwards, he was so happy! He was running around the house and didn't leave my side after the bath. Every time I squatted down to pet Buster and Annie (our resident Pekingese who were feeling a bit left out) he would get between my legs pushing up against me so I would pet him. He jumped up on the couch and lay next to me the rest of the evening. He cried for a while after I left one afternoon but my husband said Freckles started following him around everywhere and spent the evening on his lap. He gets along really well with Buster and Annie (although Annie's not too crazy about him) and my parent's Peke, Bogart. He does cry at night (we gate him in the laundry/mudroom with Buster and Annie at night) and Annie showed him how to bark so he's barking a fair amount also but hopefully he'll stop that once he settles down more. He's such a wonderful dog; laid back and sweet.
This little boy has adjusted to his new environment very quickly and is just doing great. He gets along with all the dogs. He will still growl occasionally at Sam (the lab) and Buster has snapped at Freckles a couple of times but we've never had any real problems. He sticks very close to either me or my husband and spends the evenings in our laps. He hasn't had one accident in the house; he knows NO and STAY (for the most part); he's good on a leash and doesn't seem to have any bad habits such as chewing and barking. He really likes being around people and is playful.”
Freckles is up to date on his vaccines and has been neutered. He weighs 13 pounds. If you are interested in adopting this precious boy, please fill out an application. If you would like to sponsor him and help with his medical care, please click on the “sponsorship and how to donate” link.
Update 11-1-08: Freckles keeps thriving in his foster home. We hear that he is very high energy, active, and playful. His forever home will need to have a fenced-in yard for him to run around in and play. This boy loves the resident dogs in his foster family and engages all of them into lots of playing. It would be great if his forever family had another small dog with whom Freckles could pal around.
We adopt in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia and require home and vet checks. Freckles' adoption fee is $250.00.
